3 Daily Exercises You Should Do to Keep Your Mind Sharp

Recent research has proven the link between mental exercise and a quicker, more agile mind. Scientists say you can improve your memory, focus, and concentration by working out your brain every day, just as you strengthen your muscles by lifting weights at the gym. Want to keep your mind sharp? Give your brain a workout every day with these three fun exercises.

1. Use your left hand

If you’re right-handed, that is. Using your non-dominant hand for daily tasks like moving your computer mouse, or combing your hair, will probably be challenging, especially at first. But that’s the idea! Switching hands will force you to work harder, strengthening the connections in your brain. It’s a workout you can even do at work!

2. Pick a puzzle

Whether you’re into words or numbers, there’s a mind-sharpening puzzle out there for you. Try Sudoku, crosswords, or a word search. To work out your mind to the max, switch up the type of puzzle, or challenge yourself to progressively tougher puzzles as you improve. You can find free daily puzzles online, making this a great exercise for your lunch break or over your morning coffee.

3. Change it up

Learn something new or do something in a new way. This can be as simple as taking a different route to work or school in the morning or complex as learning a new skill like knitting, or studying a new language. Anything that gets you out of your routine can stimulate your brain to create new pathways. You can get really creative with this one—the sky’s the limit!

To get the most benefit from these exercises, you should do them daily, and just like on those weight machines at the gym, you should challenge yourself to do more than you did last time. Mix it up and keep it fun, and your brain will be in great shape!
